A key focus is on seals for hydraulic and lubricating oils. In addition to its own products, Trelleborg also customizes sealing systems. The company operates comprehensive R&D centers worldwide with over 200 test benches.

The task

At the Trelleborg Innovation Center in Stuttgart, two test benches for hydrau-lic rod and piston seals, and two for rotary seals, required complete renewal. These test benches are designed to assess the sealing characteristics of individual seals and complete systems under realistic conditions while recording key parameters. For the measurement technology and process control of the new test benches, Trelleborg relies on the expertise of measX.

The new measurement and control software has a modular design and is consistent across all four test benches. It acquires all sensor data from the test benches, manages monitoring, calculations, and control routines, and executes all test procedures as specified. Users can already view custom meas-urement data during the measurement. The system provides Trelleborg with reliable results on critical seal parameters such as friction, wear, and leakage. All measurement and calculation results are stored for subsequent analysis.

In practical use

Trelleborg uses the seal test benches very effectively for dynamic functional and endurance testing during product development. As a development part-ner for customer-specific applications, Trelleborg can transparently demonstrate that solutions are validated against bespoke criteria for tightness and safety. The resulting database supports the development of new materials, geometries, and seal combinations for demanding applications. The modular software architecture enables further test capabilities to be added at any time.
